The Private Health Sector Stakeholder’s Conference (PHSC), held from 20–22 April, 2026 at the Government City Complex, Mtumba - Dodoma, underscored the private health sector as a key partner of the Government in achieving equitable access to quality healthcare services in Tanzania. While the private sector currently provides approximately 40% of healthcare services nationwide, the conference recognized significant opportunities to further enhance its contribution through increased investment, innovation, adoption of digital technologies, and strengthened collaboration between the Government and private sector stakeholders.
The conference further emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of quality and patient safety, ensuring compliance with professional standards, timely registration and renewal of registrations, and strengthening quality management systems across private health facilities. It was also highlighted that the Private Hospitals Advisory Board (PHAB) should continue to serve not only as a regulatory body but also as a facilitator of sector growth by providing technical guidance, mentorship, and capacity building for healthcare providers, rather than focusing solely on inspection and enforcement.
To accelerate the development of the private health sector, leaders encouraged greater investment in specialized and super-specialized healthcare services, preventive interventions for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), medical tourism, and the integration of digital health systems with national health information systems to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability. The Government also reaffirmed its commitment to creating a more conducive business environment by reviewing regulatory fees and charges and promoting access to affordable financing with low-interest loans for health sector investors.
Overall, the conference reaffirmed that the success of the private health sector should not be measured solely by the number of health facilities, but by the quality, safety, and patient-centeredness of the services delivered, as well as its contribution to the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the broader national health development agenda. Participants called for sustained dialogue, strategic partnerships, and closer collaboration between the Government and private sector stakeholders to build a competitive, innovative, and sustainable private health sector in Tanzania.
